You snooze, you lose... or do you?
In this fast paced society we often sacrifice sleep in order to achieve things we want to achieve.
It makes sense to a degree... the longer you are awake the more you can get done.
Is that the case though?
How effective and efficient are you when you are on little to no sleep?
What about if your kids don't sleep? How does it affect them?
Well..... it's not good....there is a long list of negative effects when adults and kids don't sleep.
If adults don't sleep the results are....
Impaired concentration and decision making
Slower reaction time
Crappy memory
Increased risk for obesity, heart problems, diabetes, etc
Increases risks for depression and anxiety
Terrible emotional regulation
Can create sleep problems such as: sleep apnea and insomnia
reduces your motivation to do anything
Best of all it reduces your lifespan!!!
Ok... now it's the kids turn...
Difficulty learning and has a worse performance at school
Causes behavioral problems (as you may know when your kid doesn't sleep)
Increases risk for depression and anxiety
It causes growth problems (because growth hormone is released while they sleep)
Weakens their immune system
Delays puberty
They are also at risk for obesity (If you haven't yet noticed... you want more sugar when you are tired)
Increased risk of night terrors and sleepwalking
They will have a harder time forming relationships
And will also be taking their poor sleep habits right into adulthood.
So.... Lack of sleep = grim reaper
How can we improve the quality of our sleep?
First.... staying away from screens before bed.
The light that emits from screens tricks your brain into thinking it is day which.....can mess up your sleep cycle and quality.
If screens are unavoidable dim the brightness way down.
We don't need ultra HD all the time.
Next.... How's your sleep schedule
Start building a sleep routine!
You will not be perfect but build a routine you can stick with.
The more consistent you are....the better your sleep life will be.
Everyone loves to have a comfy temperature in the home...but did you know keeping a cooler temperature at night will help you sleep better?
Studies show that if you sleep in a room that is between 60-67 degrees that it improves sleep quality!
Only psychos like to sleep in warm temperatures.
Last pro tip.....STOP DRINKING CAFFEINE SO LATE IN THE DAY!
Caffeine will screw up your sleep cycle and destroy the quality if you take it too late in the afternoon or evening.
If you are going to use caffeine....do it earlier in the day.
That way when you go to bed all the caffeine is out of your bloodstream.
Sleep is of the utmost importance.
Not only for your health but... for your mental wellbeing.
No one likes the grumpy sleep deprived monster you become.
Prioritize your sleep and get your family started on some awesome sleep habits!
